The lower jaw of the beak is much more prominent than the upper jaw. Inkling skulls are compact and contain large sockets to hold the eyes. In few cases a rare mutation can occur and cause the beak to have an abnormal number of hooks on either jaw. When closed, the bottom hook overlaps the upper. This beak resembles most closely to the beak of squids, with a single hook in the center of both jaws. When closed, the hooks overlap the opposite jaw.Īn uncommon characteristic of inklings. Inkling beaks are considerably softer than those of their ancestors and contain less of the proteins that contribute to the beak's stiffness and colour which is why their beaks are white. It is made primarily out of chitin, proteins, and water. The beak is an internal structure found behind the lips used for tearing food. Uncommon characteristics have only been shown in females. Some inklings possess irregular shaped masks that are winged at the edges and star-shaped pupils that may be darker or lighter than the iris. Most inklings have a simple mask and round, black pupils. The purpose behind the mask is to protect the eyes from harmful glares from the sun by absorbing some of the light. The mask has a rougher texture than the surrounding flesh and contains concentrated amounts of melanin. Inklings have large, sensitive eyes that are outlined by a mask that connect at the bridge of the nose. In fact I already explored some of these aspects in my last post. ![]() I'm fine with how the characters look within the games themselves and anything official it's just that I personally like to look a little too deeply into certain aspects and add my own thoughts and ideas into things. I've seen many different kinds of splatoon fan art but I can't help but feel like there are quite the missed opportunities regarding the combination of both cephalopod and human characteristics. Have been wanting to do my own interpretation of inkling biology pretty much ever since I got into the fandom. ![]()
